Goyam Dance.

 

Paddy is the most widely grown major economic crop in Sri Lanka. The culture & civilization of the Sinhalese who made rice their main food developed to suit their professional needs. There are several folk dances based on that agrarian social structure. Of these , the Goyam dance is the most popular.

Goyam dance is a dance performed for entertainment. Goyam dance involves a variety of agricultural activities. A special feature of  this dace is the use of a sickle to dance. Goyam dance is a collective dance. Simple movements and simple drum beats are used for the dance. 


Dr. S. Panibharatha is credited with presenting the Goyam dance as a stage play. This dance was performed under his guidance and has become an indispensable dance form on the concert stage today.

The folk poems sung at the Goyam dance are very beautiful. Those poems are called Goyam Kavi. Goyam Kavi tells about the values of the village society & the beliefs of the villagers. The poems are composed in a simple language Goyam dance is a proud dance that brings the Sri Lankan identity to the world.

 There are many great artists who have developed Sri Lankan dance & taken traditional dance to the world in search of new avenues of dance. They did a great job of preserving the Sri Lankan traditional dance. Dr. S Panibharatha is one of the artists who contributed to the advancement of traditional dance. Mr.Panibharatha was born on 24th February 1920 in Hathara Koralaya. His father was 'Pabanis'. he had an elder sister, three younger brothers and one younger sister. As a child he was called 'Panis'.  He learned Kandyan dance from Algama Kiriganitha Gurunnance. He mastered the drumming with Punchi Kira Gurunnance. He learned a lot , not only about Kandyan dances but also about Low country & Sabaragamu dance traditions.
