KATHAKALI DANCE TRADITION.
There are many distinctive classical dance traditions in India. Among those intricate dance forms. The Kathakali dance tradition has a special place. The word 'Kathakali' is derived from Sanskrit & Malayalam. The state of Kerala in Southern India is the birthplace of Kathakali dance. Kathakali dance is popular in Cheruthuruni, Guruvayur, Cochin & Trivandrum.
There are various opinions about the origin of the Kathakali dance. Studying all these, it is clear that this dance tradition originated in the temples of South India.
The theatrical structure of the classical Kathakali dance is very complex. This dance tradition should be studied with great dedication. Generally, the best age to learn Kathakali dance is between 10 & 12 years. The amateur dancer who started learning dance goes to the teacher and learns the exercises called 'Kachcha Ketta'.
Dance training is very difficult. Kathakali learners learn this tradition by staying at the teacher's house. The teacher who teaches this wonderful tradition is called 'Asan'.
Kathakali dance uses South Indian Carnatic music. The leader of the choir is called 'Ponnani'. The supporting singer is 'Sinkiti'. Musical instruments such Chenda, Maddala, Edakka & Ilathalam are used for playing.
All the characters in Kathakali dance are played by men. The Kathakali dance performance starts at around 8.00 p.m. People of the area are informed that a Kathakali concert will be held paying 'Keli Koththu'. Kathakali dance performances include Thodayam, Purappad, Meralappadam and Arangukeli.
The costumes used in the Kathakali dance tradition are very elaborate. In the Kathakali dance tradition, the make-up artist is known as 'Paththukaran'. This wonderful dance tradition is taught at the University of Kerala Arts Council.
