The Underpants Thief.

Image
One of my favourite hobbies is to watch movies and I tend to watch each and every movie at cinemas. Before corona came I watched every movie I came across. I would like to describe myself as a better cinema fan whom would like to watch a variety of movies. Yet would never have enjoyed the Sinhalese movies as any other since I believe the quality is lacking. What I meant is that the Sinhalese movies are lagging behind when compared with other movies all around the world in the aspect of technology, artistic value, originality etc. If I feel the standards are comparably high, I would never miss to watch that film. I strongly believe the language is not a barrier to enjoy a good movie. I'm going to tell you today about a great movie I watched.  Finally I am delighted to say that I have enjoyed a Sinhalese movie after some time. The movie "Gangi Hora" (The Underpants Thief) has exceeded my expectations. This movie depicts a social crisis...

Polonnaruwa City

Image
P olonnaruwa in the North Central Province of Sri Lanka is historically significant as it is the second kingdom of Ceylon. By the end of the Anuradhapura Kingdom, the country was invaded by the Cholas due to the administrative decline of its rulers. The Cholas seized power and made Polonnaruwa their administrative centre. The Chola rulers ruled Ceylon for about seventy years and Prince Keerthi of Ruhuna fought against it. Prince Keerthi defeated the Cholas and became king in 1055 AD under the name of Vijayabahu. King Vijayabahu, a very special ruler, made the country economically self-sufficient. King Parakramabahu I, who reigned in 1153 AD, developed Polonnaruwa. King Parakramabahu built the Parakrama Samudra which provides continuous water for agriculture. Due to this, the reign of King Parakramabahu became a golden age of agriculture. King Parakramabahu worked to develop the country economically as well as religiously. King Keerthi Sri Niss...

AN UNFORGETTABLE WEEK.

Image
Of course I'm going to tell you about a week in my life that I will never forget. It's about a wonderful trip that lasted seven days. This was an idea that come to suddenly. Our family usually goes on a picnic once a year. Due to the corona epidemic in the country, we could not go anywhere for about two years. So last month the risk of a covid epidemic was somewhat reduced so we decided to go on a picnic for our peace of mind. The 1st thing we did was book a few easy days for everyone. Then we got a vehicle ready. We chose a family-friendly driver for our trip. Then we decided to go to areas where the risk of the corona is low. We also decided about going to less crowded places. Then we decided exactly where to go on our trip. As the day drew near for our trip, we packed our things for the trip. Departure day dawned. We started our journey around 2 in the morning. We arrived at our 1st-day viewing point around 7 a.m. It's a beautiful village indeed.  That is the village of ...

Origin and evolution of Wannams.

Image
Wannam can be described as a classical dance form outside of Shanthikarma. It can be seen in all the three traditions of Kandyan, Low Country & Sabaragamu. Wannam has been created based on various themes. Wannam is created according to different rhythms and different tone series. The word Wannam is a word that came to Sinhala from the word "Wannm" in the Tamil language. The idea here is to praise. It is clear from this that Wannam was created by combining the South Indian arts, culture & Sinhala rhythms that influenced Sri Lanka during the Wannam era. In both Kandyan and Sabaragamu traditions, Wannam is based on some living or inanimate object. It is themed around an animal, a God, an event or an abject. But in the low country dance tradition, Wannam was written to gain blessings. Wannam was first composed for singing. Later, Wannam was used for dance. Kandyan Wannam was composed in the 18th century. Wannam is an art form inspired by South Indian art & cultu...
